1. Words Set Spiritual Laws in Motion
“The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” – Matthew 12:37
Like it or not, your words have power.
This is a timeless truth we can’t emphasize enough.
Words—especially your words—set spiritual laws into motion, either for good or bad. This is how God designed it. Spiritual laws are activated by the words you speak. How do we know this?
- Proverbs 18:21: The tongue has the power of life and death.
- Mark 11:22-24: You will have whatever you say.
- Proverbs 13:3: He who guards his lips guards his life.
These are just a few examples. The Bible is full of warnings about careless speech because God knows words carry immense power.
The very first words spoken to humanity were, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth!" (Genesis 1:28). These words were a declaration of blessing and empowerment, revealing God’s will for us. To align with His will, our words should reflect His, no matter the situation.
We see this principle at work in the story of Jairus. When Jairus learned his daughter had died, he could have let grief, anger, or fear take over. But Jesus intervened, cautioning him with these words: “Do not fear, only believe” (Mark 5:36, ESV).
Jairus didn’t speak a single word in response, which was key. He didn’t agree with the bad report, and as a result, a miracle unfolded—his daughter was raised from the dead.
What about you?
What would your first words be if you received bad news from the doctor? Or found out you’d lost your job? Or learned your child was in trouble?
Matthew 12:37 reminds us, "The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” If your words contradict what you want to see, you’re setting negative spiritual laws into motion, which can lead to undesirable outcomes.
It’s much easier to speak the right words from the start than to try to undo the damage caused by impulsive, emotionally driven words.
2. Words Establish Your Faith Stand
“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” – Mark 11:23 (NKJV)
Your first response to any situation is crucial. Whether it’s anger, fear, or sadness, your initial reaction often sets the tone for how you’ll handle the entire situation. If you start with doubt or fear, it becomes much harder to shift into faith because you’ve already told yourself—and the spiritual realm—how you feel about it.
On the other hand, speaking faith-filled words from the start will establish a solid foundation of belief. These first words will help prevent you from becoming double-minded—bouncing between fear and faith—and keep you in a position to receive from God.
As James 1:6-7 explains, a double-minded person receives nothing from the Lord. So, it’s important to choose faith from the beginning.
We see this principle in the story of the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4. When her son suddenly died, she had every reason to let grief and despair overwhelm her. She could have broken down, cried, or even started preparing for a funeral. But she didn’t do any of that. Instead, she laid her child down and sought out the prophet Elisha. When asked how things were, she declared, “All is well.”
Her words of faith set the stage for a miracle—her son was restored to life!
FIRST WORDS matter. The next time you face a crisis, be prepared to say, “All is well,” even when things look grim. You can prepare yourself by filling up on God’s Word every day. When trouble comes, you want your first words to be life-giving, not filled with panic or fear.
3. Words Grant Permission
“Bless the LORD, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word.” – Psalm 103:20 (NKJV)
Your words don’t just affect you—they grant permission either to God to bring blessings or to the enemy to wreak havoc.
Words are like pressing a start button.
They set things in motion, whether for good or for evil.
In Psalm 103:20, we read that the angels of the Lord hearken to the voice of His Word. That means that as we give voice to the Word of God, the angels of the Lord are being activated. This is not just accurate for the Word of God; if we speak careless, negative words, the demonic/fallen angels are listening as well and being activated.
The choice is ours!
We must be aware of the spiritual world, not just of this natural world.
When we speak, heaven is listening, ready to respond to the words we speak in faith. Similarly, the devil can only act upon what we give him permission to through our words. That’s why Jesus said, “By your words, you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37, NKJV).
When spiritual attacks come, your words are the keys to either locking or unlocking God’s protection over you. Psalm 91:2 says, “I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’” This is a declaration of faith. And as you speak, deliverance follows because your words open access to God’s help.
So remember: words matter. Fill your heart with God’s Word so that when trouble comes, faith is the first thing that flows from your lips, setting the right spiritual laws in motion and granting permission for God’s blessings to flow into your life.
Blessings,
Stella
